Port Moody actor takes on role as lazy, shiftless wannabe mayor
Fred Ewanuick has met a few mayors in his time, but none as lazy, shiftless, ne’er-do-well or sad sack as Dan Phillips, the lazy fella who decides one day to run for mayor of his hometown, the fictional hamlet of Wessex, Ont., in the new TV comedy Dan for Mayor.
“I grew up in Port Moody, and we had some characters there,” Ewanuick said, taking a break from his temporary night job as Whistler’s resident host of the victory ceremonies during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. “My dad actually ran for council and you could say he was a character. But my dad did it because he saw things going on in his community that he didn’t like and he wanted to change it. It definitely wasn’t a power thing with him.”
Ewanuick knows the cheers that greeted him every night during the Olympics would be music to the ears of any politician. “It’s just crazy up here. The village stroll is just packed, and any time Canadians do well in any event, the place goes nuts.”
